Three troopers from the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces and an officer from the Bahrain Protection Pressure had been killed in an assault at a army base in Somalia’s capital, the UAE’s protection ministry mentioned Sunday.
The assault befell on the Common Gordon army base in Mogadishu on Saturday evening, the ministry mentioned.
UAE personnel had been coaching troopers from the Somali Armed Forces as a part of an settlement between the UAE and Somalia, the ministry mentioned. Two others had been injured throughout the assault, it added.
A military officer instructed Reuters that the gunman was a newly educated Somali soldier. “The soldier opened hearth on UAE trainers and Somali army officers once they began praying,” the official mentioned.
Reuters reported the al Qaeda-linked terror group al-Shabaab claimed duty for the assault by way of a press release on its Radio al Andalus.
“We perceive the soldier had defected from al-Shabaab earlier than he was recruited as a soldier by Somalia and UAE,” the UAE military official mentioned.
Al-Shabaab was designated as a terrorist group by the US in 2008 and by a UN Safety Council committee in 2010.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud condemned the assault and instructed Somalia’s safety businesses to conduct a “thorough and pressing investigation.”
The UAE mentioned it could cooperate with the Somali authorities in investigating what it referred to as a terrorist assault, and reiterated its resolve to fight terrorism and keep peace and stability within the area.
