President-elect Donald Trump has announced the nomination of Pete Hegseth as the Secretary of Defense. Trump praised Hegseth’s lifelong dedication to the military and the country, describing him as tough, smart, and a true believer in the “America First” philosophy.
Hegseth’s last day at Fox News, where he co-hosted “FOX & Friends Weekend,” was Tuesday. He joined Fox News as a contributor in 2014 and became the co-host of “FOX & Friends Weekend” in 2017. A spokesperson for FOX News Media commended Hegseth’s exceptional work, particularly his military insights, which resonated deeply with viewers.
An Army National Guard veteran with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, Hegseth has hosted the FOX Nation “Patriot Awards” since 2019, honoring heroes like first responders. However, he will not be hosting the upcoming awards on December 5 in Brookville, New York.
Hegseth also hosted popular FOX Nation specials such as “Poison Ivy” and “The Miseducation of America.” His recent book, “War on Warriors,” became a bestseller, selling nearly 150,000 copies since its release in June 2024. He is also the author of “Modern Warriors,” another New York Times bestseller.
Throughout his career, Hegseth has been a staunch advocate for military veterans and causes. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Combat Infantryman’s Badge during his service in the Army. Trump emphasized Hegseth’s commitment to the troops and his “Peace through Strength” policy, stating that America’s enemies are on notice with Hegseth at the helm.
Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., expressed some hesitation about the nomination, while Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., and Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Fla., praised the selection. Waltz, a retired Army National Guard officer and war veteran, highlighted the need for reform at the Pentagon and expressed confidence in Hegseth’s leadership.
